This may not work in some browsers that do not support image mapping. Sorry about that, but if I put all the notes on the drawing at this scale you wouldn't see anything but words!

Sail Area Calculator .....................................[with thanks to the www Interactive Mathmatics Server at wims.unice.fr]
the sail area with three sides: in feet or metres [overwrite the example]
To solve the area of a triangle given just the sides is a bit long winded by hand. This little calculator will do it for you.
Just enter the luff, leach and foot lengths [in any order in metres or feet and inches entered as decimals of a foot - see below] and a window will pop up with the area in sq.m. or sq.ft. , value of the corner angles and more info besides.
Seperate the lengths entered with a comma as shown in the example.
For a gaff main, measure the four sides and a diagonal and treat the sail as two triangles each side of the diagonal
then add the two results together.
1"=0.08' - 2"=0.17' - 3"=0.25' - 4"=0.33' - 5"=0.42' - 6"=0.5' - 7"=0.58' - 8"=0.67' - 9"=0.75' - 10"=0.83' - 11"=0.92 feet
